Copper Beech Institute Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Statement

Copper Beech Institute is dedicated to furthering healing and justice within and beyond our walls. We recognize that as a result of systems constructed long before our founding, many groups have been historically marginalized and excluded from various spaces. We strive to heal this history by cultivating an environment of diversity, equity, and inclusivity. It is our belief that the pursuit of justice and the practice of contemplation are complementary journeys that contribute to the liberation of all beings.

We invite you to join us in this work wherever you are on your journey towards justice and healing. If you identify as a person of color, we wholeheartedly encourage you to apply for a Diversity, Equity & Inclusion scholarship to attend one of our programs.

As a community that values awareness, connection, transformation, open-heartedness, and compassionate action above all else, Copper Beech Institute is dedicated to furthering healing and justice within and beyond our walls. We recognize that as a result of systems constructed long before our founding, many groups have been historically marginalized and harmed by various social structures. We acknowledge that we live and work on land that was once cared for by indigenous populations; that many of our country’s institutions were made on the backs of enslaved people; and that persons of various identities continue to be marginalized due to their gender, faith, abilities, and more. We commit to steering our society on a new course, honoring the resilience and guidance of historically-marginalized communities.

As a community of contemplative practice, compassion, and peacemaking, we strive to cultivate an environment of diversity, equity, and inclusivity. We aim to foster an atmosphere that is welcoming to all while humbly acknowledging that cultivating greater inclusion is a journey with an unlimited horizon. This journey begins with ourselves and encourages us to look deeply inward and raise awareness of our own views, values, and biases. Through such reflection, we begin to transform the fears that often contribute to notions of separation and “otherness” and we begin to value difference, thus honoring the breadth of our various experiences.

At Copper Beech Institute, we believe contemplative practice is crucial for social justice work, for it supports individuals and communities in remaining grounded and resilient. We also believe engaging in social action is crucial to deepening one’s mindfulness practice, for it helps us better understand the suffering of the world. To pursue justice and to practice contemplation are complementary journeys.

We appreciate that questions will consistently outnumber answers and hope our inquiries will foster curiosity, respect, and inclusion. Some ongoing questions in our work towards social justice include: How do we practice openness and nurture an environment where everyone can show up fully with their different experiences? How do we listen fully and witness one another? How do we cultivate a feeling of true community?

The fundamental goals in our Diversity, Equity & Inclusion work are to nurture compassion, deepen our understanding of one another, and experience the richest sense of interconnectedness. We invite you to join us on this transformative journey.

A note from the Copper Beech Institute staff: This statement is a living document. We recognize our understandings of social justice issues will continue to evolve over time and that the words shared here may require changing. We welcome feedback and request the support of others in guiding us along the path of liberation.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Scholarship Fund

As stated in our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Statement, Copper Beech Institute is dedicated to furthering healing and justice within and beyond our walls. We recognize that as a result of systems constructed long before our founding, many groups have been historically marginalized and excluded from various spaces.

In the United States, a large and disproportionate financial burden has been placed on communities of color due to historic and present-day discriminatory practices. In light of this, we have created the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Scholarship Fund to support people of color in accessing mindfulness and other contemplative practices. We view this decision as an act of compassion that furthers the collective liberation of all beings.

We neither assume all people of color require financial assistance, nor do we believe white practitioners are less worthy of such support. Rather, in creating this fund we acknowledge the existence of systemic racism and commit to using our resources to lessen the disproportionate financial burden that has been placed on communities of color for generations.

If you identify as a person of color, we wholeheartedly invite you to apply for this scholarship and would be honored to have you visit us. You can do so by reaching out to our Program Administrator at info@copperbeechinstitute.org. Much peace to you.
