Ideal for: Police, Firefighters, EMTs, Emergency Medical Personnel, Humanitarian Aid Workers, Domestic Violence, (Sexual Assault), and Child Protective Services Workers
First responders and crisis workers are trained to run toward conflict and danger. Their courage, drive, and dedication, however, come at a cost. Vicarious Traumatization is an ongoing process of personal change over time that results from witnessing or hearing about other people’s suffering and need, combined with a sense of responsibility and/or commitment to help. VT can impact physical wellness, relationships, and can injure the responder’s personal sense of meaning, purpose, and hope. This can show up as cynicism, anger, numbing, depression and/or social isolating (to name just a few examples). The intersection of VT and potential PTSD can be another layer of complication. Understanding the challenges to their sense of safety, trust, esteem, intimacy, and control can help responders turn things around before reaching burnout. The goal is to keep responders on their feet and serving without being personally destroyed.
Approaches: Psychoeducation, self-reflection, and voluntary sharing.
(Although active participation will be invited, no one will be put on the spot. There’s great benefit in just listening and reflecting privately after the workshop.)
Objectives:
- Understand the differences between and intersection of Vicarious Trauma and Post Traumatic Stress.
- Making who you are, as a person who cares, work for you not against you.
- Recognize personal strengths and coping strategies that make an individual first responder both resilient and vulnerable.
- Gain practical tools for managing empathy and identification to help decrease the occurrence of VT.
- Leave with approaches for transforming the VT with which you’re presently struggling.
This includes skills to:
1. Improve sleep by lessening intrusive thoughts, images, and nightmares.
2. Skillfully manage anger rather than stuffing it.
3. Keep your personal relationships alive.

January marks the completion of my first 90 days as the new Executive Director of Copper Beech Institute and I couldn't be more grateful for the warm welcome of this community that is made up of our board, staff, facilitators and participants. Each of you in your own particular way help to make Copper Beech what it is, and helped to get CBI to it's current moment of evolution. With that said, I am excited to share that many inspired changes are afoot! ✨
